Phonemic Awareness

Why are phonemic awareness skills important? 25% of children from middle class families who do not receive direct instruction struggle with their phonemic awareness skills. Preschool levels of phonemic awareness skills predict future success in learning to read. This summer program is targeted to kids in preschool and those entering kindergarten. The topics covered include listening skills, rhyming, word and sentence structure, syllables, initial and final sounds, phonemes, and in introduction to letters and spelling.
