2011 Summer Reading Program
Reading can be fun!
Purpose
To teach children to find the joy in reading and to provide useful strategies for
building vocabulary, comprehension, recall, and writing skills.
Target Age
Children reading within the third through six grade level.
Time Frame
Wednesdays 10:30-12:00, from June 15th through August 10th.
Description
The students will be guided through the reading of the book Frindle by
Andrew Clements. They will be taught strategies to learn vocabulary, comprehend what
they read, create mental images/visualize to aid recall, and organize information for
efficient written expression. They will be provided with fun extension activities relating
to the story and will also engage weekly in an enjoyable project (e.g., recipes, origami,
joke telling) that requires reading abilities.
