READ all about it!
Orton-Gillingham is a multi-sensory approach that will enable students, by direct instruction, to review, to learn new concepts, practice, and to apply what they are learning. This program combines a strong literature program that includes a mix of written and oral language with organized, direct instruction to meet the needs of emergent readers. The approach systematically teaches your child sound/symbol association, word blending/decoding, syllable types, and spelling of higher level concepts. Orton-Gillingham utilizes a five-part lesson plan focusing on an intensive review of previously learned concepts, teaching a new phoneme/rule, a section focusing on decoding multiple syllabic words (when appropriate), phonemic awareness, vocabulary, and fluency, teaching non-phonetic words, and comprehension. Measurable success has been achieved with using this program in learning resource centers and the regular classroom. The approach helps give students the necessary tools to achieve greater success in school and in life.
